Question Answer
Who is Robert Hooke and what did he do? Robert Hooke is an English scientist and in 1665 he used the three-lens compound microscope. He used it to examine cork, he found that there were small rooms found in a monastery, he called them cells.
Who is Anton van Leeuwenhoek? Anton van Leeuwenhoek is a Dutch tradesman, who studied new methods for making lenses to examine cork. In 1674 he became one of the first people to describe living cells.
Who proposed that plants are made out of cells? A German scientist named Matthias Schleiden.
What are the major principles of the cell theory? All organisms are made of cells. All existing cells are produced by other living cells. The cell is the most basic unit of life.
Who is Schleiden? Schleiden was the first to note that plants are made of cells.
Who is Schwann? Schwann concluded that all living things are made of cells.
Who is Virchow? Virchow proposed that all cells come from other cells
What is cytoplasm? Cytoplasm is a jellylike substance that contains dissolved molecular building block such as proteins, nucleic acids, minerals, and ions.
What are organelles? Organelles are structures specialized to perform distinct processes within a cell.
What are Prokaryotic cells? They do not have a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles. Instead, the cell's DNA is suspended in the cytoplasm. Most prokaryotes are microscopic single-celled organisms.
What are Eukaryotic cells? They have a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles. The nucleus, the largest organelle encloses the genetic information. Eukaryotes maybe multicellular or single celled organisms.
What is a cytoskeleton? A network of proteins that is constantly changing to meet the needs of a cell.
What are intermediate filaments? Microtubules are long hallow tubes. They give the cell its shape and acts as "tracks" for the movement of organelles. When cells divide, microtubles form fibers that pull half of the DNA into each new cell.
What is a nucleus? A nucleus is the storehouse for most of the genetic information, or DNA in your cells.
What does DNA contain? DNA contains genes that are instructions for making proteins.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum. Or the ER, is an inter connected network of thin folded membranes.
