Project
A well-planned sequential series of tasks to achieve a result. Have a defined beginning and end, a scope, resources, and a budget. Approved before they are funded and allocated resources
Postmortem
A method for evaluating project performance, identifying lessons learned, and making recommendations for future projects
Ways to keep projects on track
1. Set realistic and detailed project plans with adequate time and resources
2. Encourage timely feedback and be willing to learn
3. Manage risk with regular project status reviews
Red flags for projects
1. Project launched without senior buy-in
2. No detailed project plan
3. Meetings are scheduled ignoring availability of team members
4. Users have had little or no early involvement
5. Not detailed testing plan exists
6. No training budget
7. Scaled down from original plan
Business case
A presentation or document that outlines the justification for the start-up and funding of a project.
Project portfolio management (PPM)
A set of business practices to manage projects as a strategic portfolio
Deliverables
Items that you hand off to the client or management for their review and approval and that must be produced to complete a project or part of a project
Scope creep
Refers to the piling up of small changes that by themselves are manageable but in aggregate are siginficant
Statement of work (SOW)
A written, definitive statement that defines the project plan (without any opinions or alternatives in the scope). A legal contract used to document the agreement of business terms between parties
go/no-go decision
A formal decision made by the project manager, sponsor, and appropriate executives and stakeholders after a SOW and the business terms have been decided
Responsibility matrix
Lets everyone know who is responsible for completion of tasks
Gantt chart
A horizontal bar chart that graphically displays the project schedule
Baseline
A specification of the project plan that has been formally reviewed and agreed upon. It should be changed only through the formal change control process. Used for monitoring and controlling
Variance
Change away from the plan. Also called deviation
Critical path
The longest path of tasks through a project, as shown on a Gantt chart. A delay of any task on the critical path with delay the project
System development life cycle (SDLC)
The traditional system development method for large IT projects
Work breakdown structure (WBS)
List of tasks in a project shown in sequential order, resources allocated to each task, and schedule
Triple constraint
Three attributes – time, scope, and cost – that must be managed effectively for successful completion and closure of any project
Project management
Structured methodology to plan, manage, and control the completion of a project throughout its lifecycle
Integrated change control
Processes that help to manage the disruption resulting from requested changes and corrective actions across the project life cycle
