Juxtaposition placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast. "horrible and beautiful"
Understatement is a figure of speech that makes a situation seem less important or serious than it is. "A small prairie town"
Metonymy a figure of speech consisting of the use of the name of one thing for that of another of which it is an attribute or with which it is associated. ex "My eye's were formed there"
Imagery consists of descriptive language that can function as a way for the reader to better imagine the world of the piece of literature and also add symbolism to the work. ex "A cold glitter of stars from one side of the Earth to the other"
Simile a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared. ("as" or "like") ex. "like the scrawled signature of God"
Allusion a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. ex. "the banshee wolf-voices were really only inside your head"
